Hawkins Hollow Nursery Rhymes
The Hinged Rhyme Window
The map becomes a playable instrument: its hinged rhyme window turns nonsense syllables into route meaning. The dominant anchor is the changing nonsense phrase, which gains a practical definition only after the children test the route choice in miniature.
Rhyme
Five silver drops stitched dusk to leaf;
Aleea caught their tune beneath:
“Whimble-wane, where should we go?”
The folded map said, “Not yet—slow.”
Above Clover Gate, Kaydence found
A thumb-sized trail drawn on the ground.
She moved one pebble, small and round,
To test which turn led safely down.
Zylar traced the gentler bend:
“This wider curve will serve a friend.”
They kept that choice; the steeper track
Stayed only ink, then folded back.
At Maple Hollow, tucked from sight,
A little brass hinge caught dusk-light.
Kaydence swung the window wide—
Three paper ridges rang inside.
“Plinkle-pleat!” went Aleea’s nail.
“Morrow-mum!” hummed Zylar’s trail.
Kaydence tapped the dotted line:
“Pine-to-cone—the shopward sign!”
The nonsense settled, clue by clue:
Each ridge became a route they knew.
They played the map from fold to fold;
Its paper music made sense told.
The Pinecone Shop held one cracked frame,
Its corner loose, its picture lame.
Aleea matched a mending strip;
Zylar held the corners in their grip.
The Pinecone Shop held one cracked frame,
Its corner loose beside its pane.
Aleea matched a mending strip;
Zylar held the frame in a steady grip.
