First came the deck with a dark-and-bright face.
Next came the fence shadow crossing the place.
Then came one reed and one smooth pebble round—
each new object added to what they had found.

Back toward riverside sandbar, the direct way looked neat,
but a tiny green sprout rose beside their feet.
Finishing quickly would press its sandy ring;
the smallest living obstacle changed everything.

They did not move the sprout or flatten its mound.
Haylee used the mound’s width to measure safe ground.
Emmitt laid the pebble one mound-width away;
Callen placed the reed where its shadow could sway.

Lex reversed the deck: bright side, dark side, turn.
Fence shade, reed shade, pebble shade—return.
The obstacle had become the measuring cue;
their altered route kept the little sprout in view.

The five-minute sprinkle deepened every shade.
