The Slow-Fast Pinwheel
From one side came Austin, with dew on each rail;
From the other came three in a pearl-colored veil.
Callen Crow called, “Race you!” Aralynn said, “Deal!”
Emmitt said, “First let the pinwheel tell how we feel.”
Slow: Hinge it open; breathe in, soft and round.
Fast: Huffity-puffity—whir without sound!
The air barely stirred it. One flap made a flop.
Emmitt chose one small word for the signal: “Stop.”
Slow: Austin took one careful step to the seam.
Fast: Callen cried, “Speedy!” and tripped on his dream.
Callen bowed to the railing. “My race ran away!”
Aralynn grinned, “Then we’ll race it some other day.”
No one laughed at Callen; they laughed with his line,
And kept just the pinwheel from their first big design.
Slow: Austin placed one foot where the deck stayed dry.
Fast: Aralynn zipped to the alcove—then froze on “Why?”
“Because stop means stop,” little Emmitt made clear.
They turned before sandbar and gathered back near.
Callen watched Austin’s next careful pace:
“Your slow step can time us. It wins this kind of race.”
Slow: One Austin-step; breathe while the pinwheel bends.
Fast: Zip to the alcove—then wait for your friends.
They crossed no farther; they played where they stood,
With quick quips and slow tips of the pinwheel’s wood.
Above them, the weather vane gave one small nod;
Below, four dew trails made a loop on the sod.
From deck-side to alcove, then back the same way,
Before riverside sandbar could join in their play.
