Fern Trail Bell Promise

Hawkins Hollow Nursery Rhymes

Fern Trail Bell Promise

Child-facing question: Can we say the three-part promise backward—and find who can use the extra beat? Dominant anchor: The bell-tipped promise ring holds three ordinary cue pieces that first sound forward, then assemble in reverse into “Ring, wing, step.” Cast: Spencer, Callen Crow, Baby Bentley, and Lillian. Lillian is included because the extra yellow ribbon gives her a necessary, text-supported timekeeping role. Zylar was considered as available but excluded because a fifth participant would crowd the three-part pattern and newborn-safe support.

The Bell-Tipped Backward Promise

Above berry landing, three choices lay:
“Follow the ring” could mean hold it—or follow its way.
Spencer went slowly down fern-shadowed ground;
Callen took quick little hops, not a group line around.

Baby Bentley heard from safe, steady support
As the promise ring chimed its soft, ordinary note.
Slow: Spencer steps where the wet ferns gleam.
Fast: Callen wing-flutters over one bright stream.

Three cue pieces waited on the ring’s round side:
A footprint, a feather, a bell open wide.
“Say them as found,” Callen started with cheer:
Step, wing, ring! But the windmill path did not clear.

Spencer looked back. “The promise said reverse.”
They turned the three pieces and tried the new verse:
Ring, wing, step! Let the last become first.
Fast: Ring with a ding! Slow: Step through the burst.

Then under the ring was a ribbon left loose—
One extra yellow strip with no pattern use.
Lillian stood by, just outside the three.
Spencer asked, “Would you keep our beat where we can see?”

Lillian tied it to a fern tip, light and low;
It lifted one finger-width when the faint air would blow.
Ring, wing, step— Lillian waited, then tapped;
Callen held still while the yellow ribbon flapped.

They reached windmill path with no marching row,
Spencer beside Lillian, Callen moving slow.
Bentley heard every bell-tone, safe and near;
The yellow ribbon marked when the next beat was clear.

Ring, wing, step— one space still stayed.
The windmill’s loose gate gave a plain wooden clack.
No one announced it; the rhythm just fit:
Ring, wing, step—clack. And the whole path answered it.
