The Puzzle With Five Jobs

On creek pebble shelf, every pebble shone;
Pearl-gray dawn made a quiet room of stone.
One bell-tipped route puzzle stood in the dew,
Its little window framing blueberry trellis in blue.

Job one: “A window,” said Alice. “It shows where we planned.”
Job two: “A Bell Captain badge,” Austin offered by hand.
Callen shook his head. “No captain for me.
I’ll be Clue Shadow—quiet as quiet can be.”

The planned ring would not carry in air barely stirred.
So Callen watched shapes instead of chasing a word.
Job three: The puzzle made shadows on pebbles below;
Alice matched each dark notch to the route they could know.

“Ring it now?” asked Austin. Callen answered, “Not yet.
That bell tip sits crooked. Let’s check what we get.”
Alice touched only the rim; one loose seam showed.
The rejected idea became their safety-code.

Job four: A seam-checker—turn, look, and compare.
Austin held it steady; Alice marked the small tear.
Job five: A pretend guide through pebble-shelf bends;
Callen moved its shadow while the real route made sense.

They stayed on the shelf and revised as they went:
“Window, shadow, seam check”—three jobs with intent.
The trellis stayed distant; the evidence stayed near.
Imagination drew paths, but the loose seam stayed clear.

Alice wrapped the split with one blue woven band.
Austin pressed the knot flat with one careful hand.
Callen tested the bell tip; it rested straight and still.
The puzzle kept its blue mend—and its new safer skill.
