The First Cue Was “Room”
“We planned the ending,” said Aralynn Fox,
“but our beginning is shut in a box.”
Kaydence held three cards: Look, Listen, Place.
Aydin watched quietly, giving thought space.
Above mailbox bend, each chose a way down;
No group line was needed, no leader wore a crown.
At ribbon meadow, the telescope rang:
Aralynn: “Ting!” Kaydence: “Mmm.” Aydin: “Clang?”
The word lens showed little-library step.
“Look says go,” Aralynn said, “so our plan is kept.”
Kaydence traded Look for Listen with care.
Aydin traded Place—then pointed to empty air.
Aralynn: “Ting says start.”
Kaydence: “Mmm says hear.”
Aydin: “Place needs room, or not everyone draws near.”
They had missed that condition at the opening ring.
So “Room” became the first cue for everything.
They traded the cards: Place, Look, Listen—new;
Each decision changed which helpful job each would do.
At little-library step, the telescope bell
Rested beside one small woven shell.
Aralynn placed a cushion; Kaydence moved one crate;
Aydin set a fern screen, leaving the pathway straight.
Aydin: “Room.”
Aralynn: “Ting.”
Kaydence: “Mmm—now the three sounds braid.”
The mistaken first cue became the first cue for the space they made.
A tiny safe nook joined the gathering near—
One cushion, one low screen, one open path clear.
The telescope pointed; the role cards lay still;
The visible repair showed the changed plan by the sill.
