The Harmony That Waited

The first bell-ring made the wrong screen shake;
Lex stopped his hand. “That mistake is a clue to take.”
At butterfly station, the hinged bell stood wide,
With moss-log stage framed through its bright little side.

Loud bell: “BING! Follow the sparkle!”
Quiet Alice: “Wait for the leaf.”
Aralynn: “The damp seed-screen moved before the bell relief.”
Haylee watched one dew bead gather underneath.

“Waiting won’t help,” Lex said first. “Try one louder ring.”
But Alice’s idea stayed beside everything.
They checked hinge, screen, leaf, and ground:
The rejected “wait” became the safest way to sound.

The bell’s word-window offered one line to fill:
“The safest next sound comes after ____.”
No one counted. No one hurried the air.
Haylee answered when ready: “the leaf is still.”

The still leaf pointed softly past bee-garden edge;
A dew-mark curved away from the moss-log ledge.
They followed the evidence, not a glittery guess,
And carried the bell hinged open with care.

At bee-garden edge, one broad leaf brushed low;
A damp seed-screen whispered when the faint air would go.
The bell stayed quiet. One dew bead slipped free—
Brush, whisper, ting: three weather sounds agreed.

Indoors, the hinge could open, the screen could stand,
But no cloud-light or dew joined the planned hand.
Outside, the last picture held all three in air:
Leaf, screen, and falling bead—a harmony made there.
