At moss-log stage, Kaydence read the kite:
“Straight says windmill path; damp ribbon says right.”
Austin tested the ground where the sprinkle had lain.
Draw, step, brush—path. Then the path cleared again.
Aydin drew one soft curve with careful feet;
Emmitt brushed it behind him, smooth and neat.
Draw, step, brush—turn. The last word had changed;
The kite led them round where the wet moss ranged.
“That is only a detour,” Kaydence said with a grin.
But Austin found safe-looking patches to begin.
Draw, step, brush—try. They tried one more bend;
Making and unmaking became the game, not the end.
They reached no fast straightaway, found no finished track.
Aydin drew; Emmitt erased every mark at the back.
Draw, step, brush—care. Each foot chose its place;
Mist lifted over creek light and softened the space.
At windmill path, no footprint picture stayed.
No ribbon-road proved how much work they had made.
The hinged kite rested, its damp edge still;
The detour itself was the try-again skill.
They spoke the chorus once, with the final word spared:
