The Little Bell Lantern
Above weather-vane deck, three choices leaned low;
Spencer, Aydin, and Haylee took separate ways below.
At riverside sandbar, the floating bell shone:
“The ending is ready!” it chimed all alone.
But the beginning choice had not yet been tried.
Spencer asked, “What changed on the sprinkle-wet side?”
Three flat map pieces lay small on the sand:
A square, a roof-shape, a glow-dot by hand.

The tiny roof tipped; the glow-dot would fall.
Haylee swapped roles. “Try wide at the base.”

“What changed?” asked Aydin. “The wet sand,” Spencer knew.
“A broad base stays steady when dampness comes through.”
The bell floated onward toward ribbon meadow light.

Aydin tapped the square; Haylee slid the roof near;
Spencer placed the glow-dot when the edges were clear.
The child-drawn map was no official guide;
Its raised little ridges made rhythms when tried.

No real lantern hung there, and no flame came alive—
