The Word That Opened the Basket

The first plan had two parts, but one had to stay:
The folding basket-window—not a walk down the way.
At pinecone shop, Aydin held it near;
A folded slit showed fern trail, distant and clear.

Aydin passed it to Aleea. One broad leaf went brush.
Aleea passed it to Haylee. The basket flap went hush.
The word-window offered: “Open when ____.”
No one hurried Haylee. The blank waited then.

Haylee watched dew gather on the folded seam.
“Open when wrong,” she said, then smiled at the word.
“That word sounds wobbly,” said Haylee herself.
The joke belonged to the word—not anyone else.

At first they refolded it, hiding the mistake.
Then Zylar saw the hinge give one useful little shake.
“‘Wrong’ made the flap open. Keep that as our cue.”
So the mistake became the first thing they would do.

Wrong—brush—hush—tap— four sounds in a row.
A seed shell tapped once where the damp fibers showed.
Haylee passed to Zylar; Zylar passed to Aydin.
Each fold kept fern trail only inside the window.

Moonflower wall—named once—gave a plain sound to compare:
Its wet leaf brushed softly in barely moving air.
Back at pinecone shop, the group left one beat free:
Brush, hush, tap— then waited quietly.

A loose wooden shutter settled beside the door.
It gave one ordinary click across the shop floor.
Brush, hush, tap—click. The weather rhythm fit;
No one announced the ending. The background finished it.
