The Question With One Finger Left

The telescope slipped out before feet could race,
From bee-garden edge toward mailbox bend.
Its silver rim sparkled; Spencer chose the plain lens:
“Useful shows what needs help before the shining begins.”

At windmill path, four friends spread around.
Five fingers rose; the first question went round.
Spencer showed five and asked, “Where should it go?”
Brandon folded one: “What needs room below?”

Five, four—look near the ground.
Alice folded one more: “Which choice keeps roots sound?”
Four, three—leave the sprout clear.
Haylee changed it again: “How can our hands show care?”

Three, two—point, do not tread.
The telescope’s beam found one dew-bright sprout ahead.
Two, one— the count broke before it was done;
No finger could mark the place without shading the sun.

“A broken pattern!” Brandon said. “Start over fast?”
Alice answered, “Or build a new rule that can last.”
Spencer held the plain lens; the sparkle stayed aside.
Haylee shaped two hands like a roof, open and wide.

New rule: Skip the sprout; shelter its light.
One finger points left while two hands frame right.
The question kept changing, but never repeated its start:
Where? became room; room became care; care became part.

The pocket word telescope returned from mailbox bend.
It rested by Spencer when the fingerplay reached its end.
No one explained Haylee’s last gesture aloud:
Two open hands roofed the sprout under cotton-cloud.
