The Message in the Pause

The pinwheel left first while three friends stayed near,
From garden bell corner toward mailbox bend.
Its folded blue side fluttered once through the dawn;
Then Lex, Callen, and Aleea moved to mud kitchen.

Lex held up the pinwheel. “Captain, Callen?” he tried.
Callen said, “No captain role. I choose my own side.
I’ll be Quiet Hinge Keeper; I’ll notice each fold.”
Aleea said, “Good. A new role can fit what you chose.”

Open goes high; close settles low.
Lex opened one panel; Aleea watched its shadow.
Callen held the hinge still—not captain, not guide—
And one crooked fold showed a pale mark inside.

High becomes low; fast becomes slow.
Aleea raised the lower flap; Lex let the center show.
The pale mark broke early where one fold crossed wrong.
“A mistake is evidence,” Callen said. “Keep it in the song.”

Fast turns still; near opens wide.
Three message pieces waited, one along each side.
Aleea asked, “Should we refold?” Lex started to say yes.
Callen answered, “Pause first. Stillness may line up the rest.”

They each held one part: center, hinge, and base.
No one held the whole sign or controlled the space.
When all three paused, the split marks joined to read
A simple shelter-shape around one tiny drawn seed.

No voice explained it. No captain took the lead.
Lex held the center; Aleea held the seed.
Callen kept the hinge still, exactly as he chose;
The message stayed readable only while all three held their pose.
