The Detour That Drew

Before the first bounce, two friends saw one route:
Aleea said, “Easy.” Austin said, “Wait—it is tight.”
Haylee held the split-color bell in amber and blue;
“Let each start rotate. Then both clues can be true.”

They stayed at stump-school yard; no one marched away.
Through the bell-window only, little-library step appeared.
High bell, low hand; near shadow, far.
Haylee began the relay under pearl-gray dawn.

Haylee passed to Aleea. The starting role changed.
Fast foot, still bell; the shadow rearranged.
Aleea crossed the bright strip with room at each side;
Austin checked the narrow shade and chose not to glide.

Austin began next. He raised the bell low—
“Low can be a start when it helps clearance show.”
Near turns far; bright turns dim.
Haylee watched the two-tone shadow stretch around him.

“Bell leads,” said Aleea. “Ground leads,” Austin replied.
Haylee said, “Use both—two jobs side by side.”
One person checked width; one moved when space was clear;
The third passed the bell and rotated who began each round.

Chalk courtyard appeared once in a remembered shadow study:
A personal practice picture, not a path or map.
Its wide-loop example showed a detour round the shade;
So the detour—not the straight route—became the game they played.

High to low, near to far;
Fast to still beneath the color bar.
Each rotating start made the next shadow new;
The bell’s split light moved while all three roles moved too.

At stump-school yard, no distant step was reached.
The active detour drew what the straight route could not teach:
Amber and blue shadows joined, parted, then crossed—
A moving picture made by leaders changing spots.
