The Route That Asked a Better Question

Pinecone shop held the whole first scene;
The balance kit window shone silver and green.
Through one hinged frame, moonflower wall looked near.
Haylee said, “That view makes the next stop clear.”

The kit opened flat on one dry wooden board.
Because the small weight stayed level, the bright view seemed sure.
The invitation waited: “The useful next step is ____.”
No one filled the blank before Emmitt was ready.

Emmitt watched one dew bead reach the frame.
“Follow the window,” he answered, then tested the claim.
The damp ledge tipped; the moonflower view slid aside.
Because the surface changed, their first answer could not guide.

They followed the window clue toward moonflower wall,
But stopped before leaving pinecone shop at all.
“The window tells what we see,” Haylee said at last.
“But what keeps the kit balanced?” Emmitt asked back.

That was the real question hidden in the view.
They tried dry wood, damp stone, and woven cloth too.
Because woven cloth held level, the route pointed through blackberry arch;
They reversed the first answer without leaving the shop.

Back at pinecone shop, they marked only what they knew:
One square for dry wood, one curve where the wet ledge grew,
One open gap for the part they had not tried.
The unfinished route stayed honest, not denied.

From ground height: square, curve, gap near the door.
From above: a partial loop that promised no more.
Haylee held the kit; Emmitt left the gap clear.
The route ended unfinished—and that answer stayed sincere.
