“What did the promise ring show?”
Brandon asked beneath willow roots.
“A straight row,” he remembered first,
while cloudlight warmed the braided loops.
Callen remembered a curving row.
Neither memory pushed the other away.
One ring, two views, one changing sky—
and weather joined the game that day.
They set three tiny shadow pieces straight.
Zim-zim-zim, the bright gaps said.
Then three small pieces curved in an arc.
Zam-zam-zam, while a cloud passed overhead.
Brandon chose the straight miniature test.
Callen chose the curve.
Kaydence watched the cloudlight shift.
