Hold the Fourth Shape

Two paths leaned toward Dahl seed room,
one from each side of dawn.
Lex walked beside Aralynn;
Brandon and Zylar came on.

At reed-dock inlet, one patchwork basket
caught blue light in its seams.
Reed gave a low hum.
Wood gave a hollow tok.

Pebble gave a bright click.
Three sounds shaped three shadow questions:
Is this a line? Is this a curve?
Where should the final turn begin?

Lex held the basket steady.
Brandon listened near the reeds.
Aralynn traced the curving shadow.
Zylar watched the unfinished shape.

The first chorus hurried forward:
Line—curve—turn—go.
But the final shadow crossed one damp sprout bed,
so Zylar raised the youngest hand.

“Hold.”
The exciting turn stopped before it started.
No one pushed the chorus onward.
The held beat became part of the pattern.

Line—curve—hold—turn.
The chorus changed into directions:
follow the line, bend with the curve,
hold at the sprout bed, then turn back.

They reversed before riverside sandbar
and carried the pattern through maple-shadowed reeds.
Lex watered the leaf section first.
Brandon watered the curved stem second.

Aralynn watered two buds third.
Zylar checked the held pathway stayed clear.
Water darkened the joined garden pattern:
one leaf, one stem, two buds.

The basket made no victory sound.
Its hum, tok, and click had done their work.
The chorus helped without taking over,
and the small garden stayed open.
