The Shelf Beyond the Stage
Two paths reached toward lantern porch
under blue after-rain light.
Callen came from one clear side;
Aralynn came from the right.
At quilt lawn, one woven repair kit
opened four small things to choose:
a soft cloth, cord, loop, and shell—
not sorted by size or use.
“Comfort first,” said Aralynn,
placing the soft cloth near.
“Courage next,” said Callen,
setting the braided cord clear.
“Welcome follows,” Zylar said,
then placed the open loop.
“Noticing last,” came the shell,
small enough to change the route.
The visible pattern looked complete,
but one damp seam stayed dark.
“Try harder?” Callen asked.
Zylar answered, “What changed in this part?”
The seam had softened in the sprinkle.
The repair would not hold today.
Aralynn left one panel unfinished
instead of pulling it into place.
“We can return when the seam is dry,”
said Zylar. “Leave the corner clear.”
The unfinished work became a promise,
not a mistake to hide or fear.
They reversed before ribbon meadow.
Comfort, courage, welcome, notice
guided a wider way back
toward lantern porch.
The expected stage stayed elsewhere.
The path ended at a low story shelf,
where the folded cloth could wait
until the seam was ready.
