The Tik Beside the Blank Place
Two paths reached pumpkin corner
through lavender evening light.
Spencer and Callen moved slowly.
Alice and Zylar moved quick.
The floating dial held two shadow questions:
“Which speed keeps the edge in view?”
“Which speed leaves the center steady?”
Both pairs had work to do.
Quick feet found the upper side.
Deliberate feet found the lower seam.
Then each pair traded speeds
and tested the opposite scene.
The route still would not finish.
One damp curve stayed unclear.
No one pushed the dial farther
just because the ending felt near.
They reversed before acorn table.
Callen held the lower edge.
Zylar held the upper edge.
Spencer and Alice kept the middle open.
A tiny dew bead touched the dial ring:
tik.
The smallest sound became the closing image.
No finished route followed it.
At changed pumpkin corner, one board waited.
Spencer placed Now on one side.
Alice placed Later beside it.
Zylar left one square open wide.
Callen held the board steady.
The blank place could wait.
