The Youngest Stop Cue

Zylar, softly: Hush.

Lex lowers his hand.
Kaydence points to the damp gap.
Emmitt sets the ladder down.
Everyone stops before making a new sound.

The Rejected Idea

Emmitt: We could lay the ladder straight across.

Kaydence tests the first edge.
It presses into damp ground.

Lex: We will not use that idea as the bridge.

Zylar: Use it as the check.

The group turns the rejected idea into a rule:

All: Hush, test, cross, clear.
Check each support before feet come near.

Little Library Step

They return along the altered route to little-library step.

Lex places block one on dry ground.
Kaydence places block two beyond it.
Emmitt places block three at the far edge.
Zylar points while each support is tested.

Together they lay the shadow-cut sound ladder across the three blocks.

One Use

Kaydence checks the near edge.
Emmitt checks the far edge.
Lex crosses once.
Zylar whispers, “Hush.”

The bridge is used no second time.

Dismantling

Emmitt lifts the ladder clear.
Kaydence removes block one.
Zylar carries the light second block to the stack.
Lex removes block three.

The gap is clear again.
No bridge remains.
